Garni & Geghard

Being built in by Armenian king Trdat 1st in 77 AD Garni temple dedicated to a heathen God of Sun. Garni is the only remaining Hellenistic architecture of Armenia. It is located in the South-East part of Yerevan, near the village of Garni.
Garni is very popular with its architectural specific design and notable for its fortress complex. The architecture of Garni ignites awe and wonder at the same time. Another important factor is its position amidst rocky cliffs that worked as its defenders.

Northeast of Garni, higher up the gorge of the Azat river, there is a magnificent monument of medieval Armenian architecture — Geghard monastery. Geghard is another incredible ancient Armenian monastery, partly carved out of a mountain. Though the monastery has been around since before the 4th century, the main cathedral was built in 1215.
